Sony seems to have incredibly high hopes for PlayStation over the coming months. In a new interview with financial and investment publication Barron's, Sony Interactive Entertainment's SVP and head of global marketing Eric Lempel sets the stage: "We’ve had consoles a bit here and there over the last three holidays, but this is the first time we’re in full supply and we’re thrilled about that."
Lempel is referencing the fact that stock issues have been a consistent problem for the PS5 since its launch in 2020 — mostly due to the pandemic — but with things finally smoothing out over the last year or so, this holiday season should be huge for the current-gen console.
"Our outlook on PlayStation 5 is really strong. We’re expecting one of the strongest seasons in our history in terms of console sales," Lempel states. "It’s a combination of the great product we have and the titles that have released since launch — as well as most recently with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2."
Indeed, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was always going to be blockbuster, and it's very easy to imagine that a lot of people will be saving it for Christmas. Together with the new PS5 'Slim' model that's rumoured to release within the next few weeks, it's no surprise that Sony's betting on a big holiday period.
Do you think the PS5 could go on to break sales records over the next few months? Watch those bundles fly off the shelves in the comments section below.

The is the first Christmas season that's it's been readily available to go into any store and buy one off the shelf so I expect sales to be very high indeed
Just here for the "where's the pro" comments.
They should have asked about a showcase lol
My sister picked one up for my nephew. He wanted Spider-man 2 for Xmas, she was slightly miffed when I told her he'd need a new machine to play it on. The cool uncle gets to gift him Spider-man 2 though. So it's all good!
But what is there coming first party wise,ps5 and psvr2.This is the 1st time in a long time I've got no idea what's coming out in the future and it's weird!
@ROTTIEMAN16 come and tuck into my 2023 backlog son its huge, just wish i had the time to ponder questions such as yours 😀.
@ROTTIEMAN16 majority of casual gamers do not think that way. They see games like COD, Spiderman or Avatar and do not care about much else
PS5 Christmas with stuff like "Fifa", CoD, Spider-Man, Hogwarts, Star Wars, God of War, Final Fantasy, Assassin's Creed, all huge names with relatively new games available and the type of stuff people will wait until Christmas for as they make easy winning presents for parents and families.
Compare this with years with shortages and more niche stuff like Returnal and Demons Souls
Yeah, it's gonna be quite mad 😁
Ps5 is definitely gonna sell a lot this holiday.playstation the g.o.a.t. 🐐 👑 word up son
Wonder if will get PS5 disc £399.99 over the Black Friday week, the rumour mill series x are doing it.
But then again they haven’t got Spider man 2.
Nintendo will do their usually MK8 bundle deal again I guess, the usual boring deal.
@ROTTIEMAN16 We know early 2024 is packed particularly on the 3rd party multiplatform side but there's also 3 Playstation Studios releases (Helldivers 2 and Destiny 2 The Final Shape DLC in February and MLB The Show is annual so will be around March) and major 3rd party exclusives like FFVII Rebirth in February.
Beyond that is more vague (some 2024 releases and some TBA releases) but then again it was like that after GoW Ragnarok last year. We didn't know about the Burning Shores DLC until the Game Awards, Spider-Man 2 wasn't given a Fall 2023 release window until mid December 2022.
I do think we'll get a State of Play in November though which'll give a release date for Stellar Blade (currently scheduled for 2023).
@Majk_SVK
Totally agree it won’t affect PS5 Christmas sales.
But being an avid gamer I’m a bit concerned what is next year from Sony in house wise.
By know we normally have game play and release date for big single player AAA from Sony for next year and even a second game as well.
I don’t see any big AAA in 2024 from Sony yet.
Yes some smaller things and paid exclusivity from third party, but nothing from the Sony big boy guns.

PS, everyone is entitled to a quieter year now and again though in house wise big AAA.
Record breaking quarter coming for Sony
Spidey will move a ton of units.
If it was actually exclusive, FFVII Rebirth would probably have sold me on a PS5 by now.
@OldGamer999 yeah I know - it was just that topic of the article is overall sales.
But I understand you - I think this years show was extremely weak and even though they probably have some aces in the sleeves, they hold keep them to themselves until early before release. :/ not much to look forward
@OldGamer999 There's a difference between being concerned as a result of no known big 1st party release for 2024 so far and being under the impression we know nothing about 2024 when we do know stuff.
My guess is it's going to be Wolverine and naturally you wouldn't want to have Wolverine interfere with the Spider-Man 2 marketing (they're both big single player Marvel games).
@Grumblevolcano
Fantastic if it is Wolverine but I would be very surprised for 2024 then again Insomniac maybe able to pull it off.
We don’t really know much about 2024, like I said we normally have gameplay for big in house AAA by know and a release date for 2024 and sometimes two games.
My bet is definitely on GOWR DLC for 2024 and a slightly quiet year for other big in house AAA games. Which is cool they can’t pull it off every single year, history tells us that.
@Pranwell Am there too bud 🤣
@Grumblevolcano
Actually only including Sony in house studios and big AAA games 2023 has not had that many.
I maybe wrong.
HFW burning shores DLC
Spider man 2.
Obviously that formula has worked very well for PS5 this year, so maybe that’s the new release trend.
So 2024 maybe GOWR DLC around March 2024
And one big AAA around October 2024.
And the rest made up of exclusives from third parties like Ronni and a few smaller games.
Wish they had a couple other new exclusives than spiderman
@Smiffy01 played everything this year apart from baldurs gate....just wish there was a bit more transparency from sony about there studios or what's the point in a ps5?
@ROTTIEMAN16 Production times are just too long now for AAA titles because people expect more, tbh ive seen more innovation in the indie scene than any 1st party title over the last few years on any platform so i dont actively seek or care what tbe 1st parties are up to. Also i never read about PC gamers complaining about having nothing to play that justifies their £2000 machine. They seem just as happy playing indies as big titles, maybe its console players sense of expectation and entitlement that needs to change.
@Smiffy01 I am 52 and I've gamed on every console and pc since 1980 so I feel my expectations are where they should be....plus at no point did I say I had nothing to play?
@ROTTIEMAN16 Aye ah know that, its just comments i see a lot of aimed at indie games releasing on ps5, tbere seems to be ignorance towards them on this platform as opposed to others. Im 51 btw 😀
finally got one on sale in switzerland. only issue is the block the light out size. but my poor ears are so happy after the F16 ps4 pro
Spidey 2 will be the big selling point, the PS5 is the console everyone will want this Xmas because its the only way to play Spider-Man 2.
@ROTTIEMAN16 why is that a bad thing? i don't want to know , i want to be surprised. why does everything need to be spoiled before its announced? let the studios cook , when they are ready to show their games off it will be a nice surprise.
@Smiffy01 not to mention they want to get rid of time crunch dead lines , making them work 70-80 hour work weeks.
@twitchtvpat you don't want to know,I do want to know....imagine that two people with differing opinions and wants 🤷♂️
@ROTTIEMAN16 well you are going to be waiting a while either way , idk what else to tell you.
